You mean photography is work? Yikes! Yes, photography is work. I dub workflow as all the steps required to take a photograph, categorize it, possibly archive it, edit it, possibly publish it, then print it. With the digital age, this workflow is a bit more mired as we have a stronger emphasis on the ability to adjust and edit. On the flipside, because of the digital age, we have people who have zero photographic technique skimping on the initial part of taking the picture. Because thanks to the digital element, you can keep taking thousands of bad pictures mindlessly and hope one of them comes out okay, right? I'm not a man of attrition.
Taking the photography
- How are you carrying your equipment? Is it detrimental to your ability to take random shots? Are you even interested in taking random shots?
- How long does it take for you to get the proper settings for the type of shot do you want? If it takes you no time at all, is it because you are using automatic settings? Or is it because you are very comfortable with the controls? Do you find the ergonomics of the camera to be detrimental to your ability to pick the proper settings?
- Are you taking a lot of low light shots? How are you compensating for this? Are you using flash a lot? Are the shots coming out poorly? Are you using a tripod? Do you find it too heavy to carry around? Does it take too long to setup?
- So you bought a lot of filters. Is it troublesome to take them on and off all the time? Have you done any side by side comparisons of identical shots with and without the filters? Is there any significant difference to you? Can anyone else you know see the difference?
- Are you running out of compact flash too often? Have you considered shooting at lower quality instead? Have you considered a portable harddisk? How much battery life does it have?
- Can your computer process RAW images? Do you care for RAW images? Do you understand all the benefits of RAW?
- How long does it take to process photos? Do you bother to process at all?
- How long does it take to organize the photos? Do you organize at all?
- Do you back up your data? How often do you back it up? Do you need your photos available all the time? Have you considered a RAID solution to maintain high availability
- How hard is it for you to recall a picture and print it out?
